Helmut Newton. Berlin, Berlin - Newton Helmut - książka
Brand: Taschen
Helmut Newton, born in Berlin in 1920, began his training as a young photographer under the mentorship of the acclaimed Yva, delving into the worlds of fashion, portraiture, and nudes. His life took a dramatic turn at the age of 18 when he had to escape the Nazis, but the city of Berlin always held a place in his heart. Newton's career soared in the 1960s in Paris, yet he continually revisited Berlin to contribute to prestigious publications including Constanze, Adam, Vogue, Conde Nast's Traveler, ZEITmagazin, Manner Vogue, Max, the Suddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, and his own Helmut Newton's Illustrated. In 1979, the rejuvenated German Vogue invited him to revisit his youthful haunts, culminating in the compelling portfolio, Berlin, Berlin! This work also inspired the title of an exhibition marking two decades of the Helmut Newton Foundation. The exhibit presents some of Newton's most memorable Berlin-centric works alongside previously unseen images spanning the 1930s to the 2000s. These images capture a variety of scenes, such as enigmatic figures in nightclubs, nude portraits in familiar boarding houses, and the vibrant Berlin film scene, featuring luminaries like Hanna Schygulla, Wim Wenders, John Malkovich, and David Bowie. In October 2003, just months before his passing, Newton transferred significant portions of his archive to his new foundation at the Museum of Photography near the Zoologischer Garten station—the very station he departed from when fleeing Berlin in 1938. In many ways, this act closed the loop on an extraordinary life and career intertwined with the city he never truly left behind.
